You’ve finished school, may or may not have been to TAFE or university and been working for quite a few years now. Life is pretty good. You have the latest iphone/android, ipad/tablet, and the holidays you are taking are getting better and better. Maybe you’re in a relationship or not, have kids or don’t.
Happy with your job or career direction or is there something missing? You talk to friends and many are doing extra training. So you think, well I have to keep up and maybe I should study something too – but what?
Short course, vocational course, uni course or online course? There’s so many to choose from and you’re already so busy so how can you fit it in and will it be worth it?
Yes, doing further training will be worth it. According to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), those who undertake VET courses are more satisfied with their jobs. Their data came from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey and the Survey of Education and Training (SET).
They found that student outcomes after completing VET courses varied between males and females. Males had higher rates of job satisfaction, higher use of skills in the job and a reduction in their weekly hours. Females, however, reported increased job satisfaction with their employment opportunities and an increased likelihood of gaining employment by a massive 33 percent.
The NCVER report also reported OECD statistics on Australia’s education rate. For those aged over 40 years, Australia had the highest education enrolment rate and the second highest rate for those aged 30 to 39 years. As you can see, we are a well educated nation and education doesn’t stop once you leave school or uni.
